A friend of mine created this comic book called Bastard Samurai, so I wrote a song called “Bastard Samurai” on the new record. He’s a big High on Fire fan so I did it in honor of his comic book. It’s about this Yakuza samurai that runs around. He’s in this gambit, and there’s this girl guiding him for the Yakuza. The Yakuza bets on him, and he’s randomly attacked at any time. They gamble on it. They know when it’s going to happen but he doesn’t. He’s such a killer—he just kills everything in his way all the time. For a comic book, it’s a really cool story. I based the song off that.

Matt Pike talks influences

Thanks to Rich Johnson and Heidi McDonald for helping spread the word on this fucking awesomeness!

High on Fire's Bastard Samurai

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CX_0W-80XKI/S3OGtz2HPQI/AAAAAAAAAAs/2IYLIKzM1ig/s320/snakesforthedevine.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5436837296735730946" />

Started 2010 with the best and worst career news I've received in a long while.

The best:

World-renowned power trio HIGH ON FIRE has completed work on its long-awaited, fifth studio album and follow-up to 2007’s Death is This Communion. Titled Snakes for the Divine, the record will drop on February 23, 2010 via E1 Music.

Recorded at The Pass Studios in Los Angeles with producer Greg Fidelman, Snakes for the Divine is HIGH ON FIRE’s magnum opus, capturing every nuance of the legendary band’s ongoing musical progression and evolution into one of heavy music’s all time greats. Sharper, faster and darker than anything the group has ever recorded, Snakes for the Divine is an unrelenting tour de force, showcasing cult guitar hero Matt Pike’s utterly unique and inventive musicianship and the band’s epic, thundering sound.

Premium production by Fidelman – the man who produced Slayer’s “World Painted Blood” and is mixing the upcoming Metallica live album – boosts HIGH ON FIRE’s strength and power while blackened lyrical tales of ancient wars, frozen planets and doomed societies emerge from Pike’s bellowing barks and throaty war cries. From the moment the leviathan-like title track explodes to kick off the album, it is immediately evident that HIGH ON FIRE is determined to push modern heavy metal into new and uncharted realms.

**********

The track listing for HIGH ON FIRE’s Snakes for the Divine is as follows:

1.) “Snakes for the Divine”
2.) “Frost Hammer”
3.) “Bastard Samurai”
4.) “Ghost Neck”
5.) “Fire, Flood & Plague”
6.) “How Dark We Pray”
7.) “Holy Flames of the Fire Spitter”
8.) “Mystery of Helm”

For those that don't know, Bastard Samurai is a creator owned project I did with Mike Oeming and Kelsey Shannon in 2002. I never could have guessed that our efforts would have inspired one of my favorite bands to write a song. It's an incredible victory for the creative team and also a confirmation to me that I am doing something right in this life.

And the worst news? If I told you, you wouldn't believe me..

so that it may rise and walk again upon this Earth..

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 206px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_CX_0W-80XKI/Sgn9QeAAAKI/AAAAAAAAAAk/5MZI0rHs_2s/s320/DC02-cvr.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335073692969861282" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 214px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_CX_0W-80XKI/Sgn9EtoaysI/AAAAAAAAAAc/6j3_LzLrybk/s320/DC02-cvr2-skt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5335073491007490754" />
Ok, so four months and no second post. Not an auspicious start. But it is what it is. All I can say is I've been busy. I lost my password for the blog and couldn't find it for awhile and you know how it is..

So I have been informed that this week the second issue of Demon Cleaner drops in North America. I thought it would be a good time to talk a little about the genesis of the cover for this issue.

All of these covers started as phone conversations between myself and Kelsey. Griz has done many many awesome covers over the years. But one thing he has never done is a cover with a giant fucking head. So we started riffing on that conceit and thought it would be cool to play with the reflection in the glasses. We talked about having the glasses be slightly damaged and the image of Gandhi reflected multiple times in the cracked lense, but settled upon this simple double image. For both of us, it invokes McFarlane's classic cover with Hulk reflected in Wolverine's claws.

So Kelsey threw together the rough which is suppose to be appearing right here but is acting like a bitch and posting itself up above. Whatever fucker..

Anyway, it's pretty awesome to receive shit like this in your email. One of the few perks of writing comics. We were both happy with the composition so K did the final version. Which is also hanging out above..

So there you have it. Some half assed commentary about the cover.

K and I are working on finishing up the remainder of our book Yeti vs Vampire. In the coming weeks I'll post some panel teasers as they come in.

blast on

M

::new year, new era::

Hi. My name is Miles Gunter. I write comics. And have done so quietly for close to ten years. Some of my credits include Bastard Samurai, NYC Mech, Zombee, BPRD, Weird War Tales and most recently Yeti vs Vampire.

After years of refusing to have a steady online presence, I've decided to take the plunge into the blogosphere. In the past my rationale for not doing this was that I didn't want to be another comic creator who spent more time talking on the internet than producing work. And to be honest, residing in the shadows has always been more appealing to me. My preference is to let the work speak for itself.

But it's a new year and the start of a new era. And I am compelled to open this house to share my work, my thoughts on the things that inspire me and maybe some talk about my foray into the insane world of writing movies, which has been my primary focus the last few years.

It may be a wash or it may not. Time will tell. I'll leave you with the cover of my new miniseries, Demon Cleaner, coming in March from my fine friends at Antarctic Press.
